Observation

“What tool or skill did you use to be successful when you were the CMO of a team?”

“What tool or skill did you use to be successful when you were the CMO of a team?”

That was one of the many great questions I got asked last week in Seattle.

Here’s my answer:

Confidence. My first few years in that new role were shaky at times. I believed in what I was doing, but I wasn’t sure if everyone felt the same. Getting used to public scrutiny and managing internal politics can play tricks on your mind.

Until the day I was challenged to attack the job the way I would do it. Don’t try and be the CMO that you think your boss wants you to be or that you think the owner wants you to be or even who the fans want you to be. Build a plan and go after it… confidently. It may work or it won’t, but at least at the end you will be sure you did it your way.

That day changed me.

That day changed my career.

That day gave me my confidence back.

Stop trying to guess what other people want you to be or how they want you to behave. Believe in you, believe in your plan and believe in your people!
