Staff may be bored of the hat shuffle, but fans love it: are you bored with it, or are they?
I am completely bored by the hat shuffle.
Observation
The best ticket promotions answer one question for fans:
“What’s in it for me?”
Back in 2017, when I was with the Padres, one of the biggest objections our sales team heard was, “I want to see you win.”
So we answered that objection and created the Five-Win Pass. Fans paid $99 and could keep attending until they saw five Padres wins.
Did some die-hard fans hate it? Yep.
But we stopped making every decision based on the loudest group of traditionalists. We had a business to run, and we needed to try new things.
Not every idea was going to work. But standing still wasn’t an option.
I love seeing the Myrtle Beach Pelicans taking a similar swing with WIN & IN, rewarding fans when the team wins at home.
Give fans a stake in the outcome.
Participation over observation.
The final score can be more than a result. It can be a sales tool.
