How you treat a long-time employee leaving your business says more about your leadership than almost anything else.
Observation
Great people don’t leave great places.
Leaders,
It’s on you to create an environment where your people feel challenged, appreciated and a part of whatever you are building towards. If a great employee leaves, you can try and blame everyone else, but the blame rests with you. Look around and evaluate what YOU could have done differently and decide if those are adjustments that you want to make for your organization. Great employees want to achieve more than just a paycheck.
Employees,
It’s on you to demand an environment where you are challenged, appreciated and you feel a part of what your company is building towards. Make sure everyone knows what’s important to you and that you want to be a part of the solution. Challenge your leadership to help you continue to grow towards your goals.
I will never diminish the importance of money, but if you take that away, what else are you gaining from your current role? How will what you are doing this year prepare you for what you want to be doing in 3 years?
If you don’t know where you are trying to go, it’s hard to choose a direction for today. It’s also hard for your leadership team to guide you.
