Observation

You never want to be the DJ who can’t play music, so you better have a backup for everything.

You never want to be the DJ who can’t play music, so you better have a backup for everything.

I was really young and just starting out as a DJ and was doing a small gig. I always got to the venues early, just in case of something going wrong and this day it did. My CD player (it was the 90’s) was dead. Time was ticking as I tried to fix it to no avail. I needed to race to the nearest store find two consumer cd players to get me through the gig. I never went to a gig without two systems in my car from that point forward.

How did that help me later?

Covering the downside of every situation is an important lesson for a dreamer. Dreamers believe everything is going to be fine, but in reality that’s never the case. I was once given the advice to “cover my downside and the upside will take care of itself.” I literally use this lesson in every facet of my planning. From staffing, to equipment purchases to budgets to business development I always want to prepare for the worst while I put in the work to to achieve the best case scenario.

Stay tuned for more “lessons from a DJ” all week.

Here’s my explanation of why I’m sharing these lessons:
