When assessing talent, it’s important to go deep and make sure they are not being spread too thin.

When assessing talent, it’s important to go deep and make sure they are not being spread too thin.

I have been helping a few partners work through some staff assessments and run across a few people that just have too much on their plates. They are usually long tenured employees that have collected more duties through the years and now are not able to be great at any of them. Upon initial observation you may see an underperforming employee, but if you dig deeper you may see capabilities, skills and most importantly a desire to be great. In those cases the lack of performance is not their fault, it’s on you as a leader to reset their job description and set them up for success.

It’s important to be very honest with them and show them the path to long term growth and success. Open communication will build trust and that trust will be the key to the success of your team.

And how good does a PB&J sound right now?
