Leaving the team showed him how little brand messaging breaks through to fans' feeds;…
One of the greatest gifts I’ve been given since quitting working for professional sports teams is… perspective!

I looked away for a brief moment…
It was a scary day yesterday. As I looked up, the car in front of me had stopped and I noticed it too late. I am ok and my car will get repaired, but I walked away from this accident with an even greater perspective of a lesson I have been speaking a lot about recently.
When I worked on the team side of sports, each moment felt like the world was relying on me to deliver, like all eyes were on me and in actuality, they weren’t. It felt very BIG, but in reality it was really big to me and the people around me, both internally and externally.
The universe of brands and activities are so massive today, that no one brand has that much dominance in the minds of the majority of consumers.
As I have stepped away from working for a team to help other businesses, this is a lesson I try to help marketers understand. You know everything about your business and you believe that every follower reads every word you post, so they must know everything too… they don’t! To be fair, there are some that do and I love that, but for the majority of customers you are one of many brands they interact with everyday. The mistake many marketers make is not doing what they believe to be right for the brand’s growth in fear of upsetting that loud core group. In most cases that group is not reflective of the majority of the businesses revenue and revenue opportunities. That doesn’t mean they are wrong, it just means they are right for them and that may or may not be right for your overall business.
Back to the car crash, I gained immense perspective when I left working for a team and yesterday that perspective grew even deeper. What you are doing is important, but always remember it’s usually more important to you than anyone else. So don’t add another layer of stress to your already hectic day.
One last thing, thanks to Elon Musk and the team at Tesla for building an incredible vehicle. It’s my favorite car I have ever owned, I was really sad to see it broken. 😞
