Generating excitement is exhilarating but amplifying genuine excitement should always be the goal.

Generating excitement is exhilarating but amplifying genuine excitement should always be the goal.
As a DJ I had to learn how to read the room. Sometimes I needed to drop a huge hit to get the crowd going and other times I needed to get out of the way to keep the wave of energy going where the crowd wanted to take it. I would always come into a set with a game plan, but I would never put my plan in front of the crowd’s desires. The art was being able to feel what they want and adjusting the plan to create the best environment for them.
As I transformed my DJ strategy into a game entertainment strategy, I discovered the difference between generating and amplifying excitement. There are teams and games that need a boost of energy and a great entertainment team should have those tools in their belt. On the other hand there are teams and games that are full of excitement and the best entertainment people know how to showcase that authentic energy. Amplifying authentic energy is always the preferred path because the results are like pouring gasoline on a fire versus starting a different fire.
The hardest part about the decision to amplify vs generate comes down to you. You have to be selfless enough to leave that tool in your belt because the circumstances gave you something better even though you really wanted to use it.
