Don't push back on the boss mid-pitch; take the vision, come back with a plan, then share…

We’ve all been there in that meeting; we don’t agree with what the boss is saying and we want to tell them our thoughts. I’m here to tell you that there is a better way!

My old boss used to drive us all very hard, so hard that my instincts to protect my team would kick in and I would push back in the moment. I lost every battle that I approached like that.

What I learned was in the moment where they were communicating their thoughts and plans, they were not in the mindset to hear my rebuttals. They wanted me to take those visions, go back and come back with a plan to bring those plans to life. When I brought back my plans, I could share my opinions and concerns and we would have incredible conversations about making it all happen. This was a crucial point in my career. Had I not adjusted, I’m not sure I would have survived.

We all learn a lot more when we listen, so next time you are in that situation… STOP reacting in the moment.
