A Love Letter to Radio—And a Wake-Up Call for Any Business 🎙️📻
Dear Radio,
This comes from a place of love, and I hope you can feel that as I share my sadness about where you’ve been heading. I have so many friends who are incredible that still have jobs, but there are a lot less now than before. It’s time for a change.
Years ago, someone asked me: "What did the industry do to lose you?"
My answer was simple:
You never invested in people who didn’t talk into microphones or sell ads.
For years, creative talent worked for a fraction of their worth because of the access and excitement you provided. But the world evolved—and you didn’t. So, many of us, myself included, found other paths toward creativity, income, and growth.
But because I still believe in you, here’s what I’d do if I were running a station or in the radio business today:
1️⃣ Hold Yourself to Higher Brand Standards
🔹 Don’t take pictures in front of wrinkled backdrops—social media is your awareness driver, and perception matters.
🔹 Stop putting talent at messy tables filled with cables—you’re now a visual medium, so act like it.
2️⃣ Commit Resources to Telling Amazing Stories—No Matter the Medium
🎨 Design matters. It’s your first impression, take it seriously. Invest in it.
🎥 Video is more important than ever. Your talent is your biggest asset—connect them with audiences where they are: on their phones.
3️⃣ Reclaim Your Position as the Original Influencers
📢 Radio talent were the first influencers—and they still are when empowered and supported correctly.
📡 Expand beyond the airwaves. The best in the game are already doing it.
Traditional media has struggled because they spent years protecting the wrong thing—their distribution method. But consumers now decide, and they decided you were wrong.
Evolve or dissolve. The choice is yours.
To my friends who are in the industry and doing the right things, and there are many, keep going and trusting your instincts. Do not let the misdirection of your company or industry be the reason you fall behind.
💡 For businesses outside of radio, the lesson applies to you too: adapt, innovate, and meet your audience where they are—or risk losing them forever.
