A year ago today I got the call that my father had passed away. In his memory I wanted to share a story about figuring out what makes you happy.
I was 22 and interning at KISS 108 (iHeartMedia in Boston). It was a dream job that paid $0.00/hr and I couldn’t be happier than when I went there everyday. After a few months, my Dad asked, “when are they going to start paying you?” I replied, “it doesn’t work that way in this business!” He scoffed at me and replied, “those who work for free never run out of work!”
I ignored his ignorance for how things worked and continued to give it all I had at my internship. Eventually I did start to get some income and was even happier with my daily efforts. One day my Dad grabbed me for a moment to see how things were going. I shared my exuberance with what I was doing. He stopped me like he had never stopped me before. He said, “you know what I said before about having to get paid? Well I was wrong… I’ve never seen you this happy. Keep doing what makes you happy and I believe the rest will take care of itself for you!”
Well Dad… you were so right! Thanks for all that you gave to me and to those that you loved. I hope this story helps another person chase what makes them happy! ❤️
