Observation

“Don’t be afraid to go there before you think you’re ready.”

“Don’t be afraid to go there before you think you’re ready.”

While getting a Peloton Interactive ride in this am, my trainer Olivia Amato made this comment and I couldn’t get it out of my head for the rest of the ride. In the ride she was talking about pushing the limits of resistance and cadence, but the same can be said in business. I once worked with someone that turned down a promotion because they didn’t feel they were ready. When I discussed it with them after, they shared that they were looking forward to someone coming in with more experience that they could learn from. That person was ready, they just didn’t believe it. The company hired someone with much less experience and the other person continued to be miserable. The toughest part is the executives didn’t believe that person could grow beyond that current role because of this interaction.

Opportunity knocks for everyone at some point, will you be ready to run through that door like the Kool-Aid Man or sheepishly answer it afraid of what is on the other side? The answer to that question comes down to drive, preparation and confidence and they all work together to make sure you answer it correctly. And yes, I have been compared to the Kool-Aid Man before.
